Severe Weather Halts Flights At Reagan, Dulles Airports

Flights departing both airports on Wednesday were experiencing delays between 15 and 75 minutes, according to the FAA.

ARLINGTON, VA — Flights were halted at Ronald Reagan Washington National and Dulles International airports on Wednesday afternoon as thunderstorms moved through the region, according to airport status information provided by the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center.

The FAA said a ground stop was put in place at Reagan Airport shortly before 4:15 p.m. As of 4:30 p.m., departing flights were delayed an average of 75 minutes.

At Dulles, a ground stop was issued around the same time, with departure delays averaging around 15 minutes.

Both ground stops are in effect until 5:45 p.m. with a medium probability of extension.

The delays apply to general airport conditions and is not flight-specific. Travelers from Arlington, Fairfax County and the greater Washington region were advised to check directly with their airlines to determine whether individual flights were affected.

The FAA also reported that some departing flight schedules could be affected because of delays to arriving aircraft. General arrival delays were listed at 15 minutes or less.
