FALLS CHURCH, VA — General Dynamics Information Technology has notified Virginia officials that 236 employees in Falls Church and Arlington could be laid off in July if the company does not receive contract awards or extensions.
The potential layoffs involve 133 employees at GDIT’s Falls Church worksite at 3170 Fairview Park Drive and 103 employees at 1401 S. Clark St. in Arlington, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notices filed with the state.
In the Falls Church notice, GDIT said the potential layoffs are tied to a pending loss of work. The company said a recompete is in process, with an award pending. If no award or extension is received, separations are scheduled for July 28.
In the Arlington notice, GDIT said the potential layoffs are tied to the completion of the current base year of the F-35 Joint Program Office contract. The company said the current contract ends July 31 and that it is hopeful for an extension. If no extension is received, 103 employees could be permanently laid off effective July 31.
The WARN Act generally requires larger employers to provide advance notice of certain layoffs and plant closings.
GDIT, a business unit of General Dynamics, is one of the Washington region’s major government technology contractors. The Washington Business Journal reported that the company had nearly $10 billion in prime contract awards over the past two fiscal years, citing USAspending.gov, and that its largest clients include the Department of Defense, the General Services Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services.
The Arlington notice is connected to GDIT’s work supporting the F-35 Joint Program Office. General Dynamics announced in 2019 that GDIT had been awarded an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter IT support contract with an estimated ceiling value of $155.6 million. The company said at the time that the work included information assurance, cybersecurity, program management, enterprise architecture, operations and maintenance, service desk support and IT training for the F-35 program.

The F-35 Joint Program Office serves as the Department of Defense’s focal point for the F-35 air system, which supports the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and U.S. allies, according to General Dynamics.
The two Northern Virginia notices are part of a broader series of recent GDIT layoff warnings in the Washington region. The Washington Business Journal reported that GDIT recently filed notices affecting workers in Bethesda, Rockville and Washington, D.C.
The Falls Church and Arlington layoffs are not final, according to the notices. In both filings, GDIT said the layoffs would occur if pending contract work is not awarded, renewed or extended.
