1. Arlington Prosecutor, Rep. Don Beyer Seek Answers After Jose Mejia Hernandez's ICE Arrest (patch.com) — Arlington's top prosecutor is urging a police investigation into how local resident José Mejía Hernandez was injured during an encounter with ICE agents while walking to work in Arlington, as Rep. Don Beyer also presses for answers. Mejía alleges serious head injuries and a stun gun use, while ICE disputes key parts of his account, prompting calls for witnesses and evidence from the Arlington community.
2. Local Event: Encore Learning Back to Campus (patch.com) — Encore Learning is inviting Arlington residents to a Back to Campus event on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at Van Metre Hall on Fairfax Drive. You can reconnect with fellow learners, meet prospective instructors, get tech help, and preview classrooms and parking, all while enjoying coffee, donuts, and a bingo game with prizes. Registration is requested by Aug. 24.
3. New president of Arlington teachers union seeks collaboration with APS leaders (arlnow.com) — Arlington Public Schools teachers have a new union president, Yorktown High School educator Danielle Jones, who's pushing for closer collaboration with APS leaders after recent collective bargaining gains. Her leadership comes as Arlington remains among the Virginia jurisdictions embracing union contracts, with future state-level changes to bargaining rules still on the horizon.
4. DC Man Sentenced After Arlington CVS Robbery In BB Gun Spree (patch.com) — A Washington, D.C. man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after a BB gun robbery spree that included a holdup at a CVS in Arlington. Investigators, including Arlington County Police, tied him to multiple 2022 robberies using surveillance, GPS tracking, and forensic evidence, and he'll also serve five years of supervised release.
