ARLINGTON, VA — Labor Day weekend is traditionally considered the unofficial end of summer, and many people try to squeeze in one last visit to the beach, neighborhood pool or another warm-weather destination.
Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, in 2026. Arlington County government offices and numerous public facilities will be closed, while transit and other services will operate on modified schedules.
Arlington Public Schools students will get a four-day weekend, with schools closed Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 7, for the Labor Day holiday.
Arlington County government offices: Closed Monday, Sept. 7.
Arlington Public Schools: Schools are closed Friday, Sept. 4, through Monday, Sept. 7, for the Labor Day holiday. Classes resume Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Courts: Arlington Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed Monday. No fingerprinting services will be available at the Arlington County Sheriff's Office because courts are closed.
Commonwealth's Attorney: The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney will be closed Monday.
Commissioner of Revenue: Closed Monday.
Department of Motor Vehicles: Virginia DMV customer service centers will be closed Monday. The DMV Select office at the Ellen M. Bozman Government Center will also be closed. Many DMV transactions remain available online.
Treasurer's Office: Closed Monday. Arlington's Customer Assessment and Payment Portal will remain available for online payments.
Libraries: All Arlington Public Library locations will be closed Monday for Labor Day.
ART Bus: ART routes 41, 42, 45, 51, 55 and 87 will operate on Sunday schedules Monday. All other ART routes will not operate.
The ART customer service call center will also be closed.
Metro: Metrorail and Metrobus will operate on regular Sunday schedules Monday. Metrorail will operate from 6 a.m. to midnight.
Regular fares will be in effect, while parking at Metro-owned garages and lots will be free for Metro riders.
MetroAccess subscription trips will be canceled for the holiday. Customers who need MetroAccess service Monday should make a separate reservation.
Parks and recreation: All Arlington County community centers except Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center will be closed Monday.
Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parks and Recreation administrative offices will be closed.
Cultural Affairs: Theatre on the Run at 3700 S. Four Mile Run Drive, The Studios at Arlington Arts and the Scenery Studio will be closed.
Trash, recycling and organics: Arlington County residential curbside trash, recycling and organics collection will operate on its regular schedule Monday. Special collections for brush, metal and e-waste will also operate on their regular schedules.
The Household Hazardous Materials/Electronics Collection Recycling Center and Earth Products Recycling Yard will be closed until Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Parking: Permit parking restrictions remain in effect unless signs indicate otherwise. Parking meters will not be enforced on the holiday.
Human Services: Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services and Mental Health Emergency Services remain available 24 hours a day, including Labor Day.
Post offices: U.S. Postal Service locations will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, and regular mail will not be delivered. Regular retail and mail delivery services will resume Tuesday, Sept. 8. Online services and self-service kiosks at select locations will remain available.
