New DEA Washington Chief To Oversee Drug Enforcement Across DMV

WASHINGTON, DC — The Drug Enforcement Administration has named Cindy Marx as special agent in charge of its Washington Division, putting her in charge of the agency's investigative and regulatory operations across Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

DEA Administrator Terrance Cole appointed Marx to the position, according to a Sept. 20 announcement. Marx has more than 25 years of law enforcement experience and previously served as an assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Division.

In her new role, Marx will oversee efforts to dismantle drug trafficking organizations, including groups linked to Mexico, while focusing on fentanyl trafficking and drug-related violent crime across the DMV, the DEA said.

"Dismantling drug trafficking organizations is not just about enforcement; it's about safeguarding our communities and protecting American lives," Marx said in the announcement. "My earlier roles have prepared me well for my current mission: addressing the national fentanyl poisoning crisis and reducing violent crime through innovative strategies that genuinely benefit the residents and visitors of the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and Maryland."

Marx began her law enforcement career as a deputy sheriff in Madison, Wisconsin, before joining the DEA in 2005. She started with the agency's Chicago Field Division and later held leadership positions in the Los Angeles Field Division and Las Vegas District Office.

She also served as deputy chief of operations and special agent in charge of the DEA's Special Operations Division, where her responsibilities included overseeing enforcement across 23 domestic offices and efforts targeting drug trafficking communications.

Marx later served as the DEA deputy director for the Homeland Security Council's National Coordination Center, according to the agency.

The DEA said Marx plans to emphasize cooperation with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies across the Washington region. Her division also plans to use technology and data analysis to support investigations and enforcement operations.

Marx is a graduate of Lawrence University in Wisconsin, where she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology.
