LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Five students from Loudoun County won National Merit Scholarships, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced Wednesday. The corporate-sponsored awards are the first announced in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship competition for 2020.
Around 160 corporations, company foundations and other business organizations financed the 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships. Virginia students represented 20 of these winners in the first round of National Merit Scholarships. Many corporate-sponsored awards can be used for up to four years of undergraduate education, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 per year. Some awards provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000.
About 1.5 million students were entered into the National Merit Scholarship competition by taking the 2018 PSAT as juniors. The 16,000 semifinalists were the highest-scoring entrants in their states, representing less than 1 percent of seniors.
