A Charge Dulles Travelers Won’t Mind

New charging stations in the airport parking deck offer convenience for electric vehicles drivers.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, or MWAA, last month installed four electric-vehicle charging stations in Dulles International Airport’s Daily Parking Garage #2 (Level 3). Because each station can charge two vehicles, airport can now accommodate eight electric vehicles. The charging stations are free as part of a pilot program. Similar charging stations are being installed at Reagan National. Each charging station can accommodate two vehicles, for a total of eight parking spaces at each airport. Air travelers can find the spaces—which are reserved for electric vehicles only—near walkways to the main terminal.

“We recognize our airports’ importance to the region as a transportation hub,” said MWAA President and CEO Jack Potter in a press release. “We are pleased to offer this service enhancement to our customers and to promote environmental stewardship."

The stations offer Level 1 (120 volts) and Level 2 (240 volts) charging. The station is activated onsite via smartphone app, ChargePoint “Charge Pass,” RFID-enabled credit card (free–used for identification purposes only) or toll-free call to a 24/7 service center.

As part of the pilot program, there is no fee to use the stations through 2013—regular parking rates apply as drivers exit the garage.
