Drop-Off Sites In Loudoun County Set For National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

ASHBURN, VA – The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has announced drop-off sites where residents can dispose of unwanted prescription drugs for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, April 25.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, April 25, county residents can discard unwanted medications at the following stations of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office:

• Ashburn Station at 20272 Savin Hill Drive, Ashburn;
• Dulles South Public Safety Center at 25216 Loudoun County Parkway, South Riding;
• Eastern Loudoun Sheriff’s Station at 46620 East Frederick Drive, Sterling; and
• Western Loudoun Station at 47 W. Loudoun Street, Round Hill.

The drop-off sites can take prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, medical samples, pet medications and vape pens or e-cigarettes as long as their batteries have been removed.

The sites cannot accept illegal drugs, syringes and other kinds of sharps or needles, epi-pens, thermometers, batteries, IV bags, blood or infectious waste, or any type of liquid or spray.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Days were established by the US Drug Enforcement Administration in 2010. This year’s event will be the 30th such day, according to the DEA, and nearly 4,200 locations around the country will be taking part.

According to the DEA, removing unused prescription drugs from houses is crucial to preventing prescription drug misuse, and the initiative has collected more than 20 million pounds of unwanted medications over the past 16 years.

In a release, DEA Administrator Terrance Cole credited the success of the public safety initiative to local and state law enforcement partners and said "Removing unused and expired medications from your home and disposing of them properly is a simple but powerful step in preventing prescription drug misuse."

The DEA's Diversion Control website also offers a search mechanism to find year-round drop-off areas around the country.
