ASHBURN, VA – An e-bike rider was killed on Loudoun County Parkway in Ashburn overnight Monday, according to a new report.
Loudoun Now reports that crews from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and its fire and rescue service responded to the parkway near the area of Uunet Drive just after midnight on Tuesday after reports that someone was lying in the road near an e-bike. The person was determined to be dead at the scene.
According to Loudoun Now, authorities say the victim was an adult and was hit by another vehicle.
The road was closed for several hours after the discovery, but was reopened around 6:30 a.m.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has been fielding a growing volume of complaints about e-bike riders and recently wrote “Enough is enough” on its Facebook page, announcing citations for two juveniles without licenses driving an ATV and an electric motorbike on roads and sidewalks. The post stressed that such vehicles don’t belong on sidewalks and warned that unlicensed use would result in towing or court dates.
An e-bike safety working group was launched in June to address the proliferation of the vehicles and their use, especially by minors.
