ASHBURN, VA – Wide receiver Stefon Diggs will sign a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders after he was released by the New England Patriots in March, according to reports.
Diggs' contract with the Commanders is reportedly worth $12 million, according to an ESPN report citing unnamed sources. Diggs previously signed a three-year contract with the Patriots but was released after a year.
Diggs joins Washington for his 12th year in the NFL, according to The Associated Press. He had 99 catches for 1,123 yards and five touchdowns in 18 games, including the Patriots' playoff run to the Super Bowl.
Following his release from the Patriots, Diggs went unsigned in free agency while facing strangulation and other criminal charges in connection with a dispute with his former private chef. Diggs was found not guilty in May, and the league said in June that he wouldn't face any discipline after a review determined there was not enough evidence to punish him under its personal conduct policy.
He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2015 and has also played for the Houston Texans and the Buffalo Bills. His career has included an All-Pro selection in 2020, when he led all players with 127 catches and 1,535 yards. He has been voted to the Pro Bowl four times.
Diggs played college football at the University of Maryland and grew up in Montgomery County.
In June, Diggs mentioned wanting to "come home" to play in the Washington, D.C., area.
"It's a lot of hopes. We're kind of figuring it out, working through some things," Diggs said at the time. "I did have a small piece of me, like damn, it would be great to come home and play in front of the fans…"
The Commanders began training camp July 29. They recently released a newly signed tight end coach after a DWI in Loudoun County.
