ASHBURN, VA – A New York man is facing multiple charges, including carjacking, after a criminal clown show in which, police say, he caused a two-car accident, carjacked a vehicle to flee to an airport, hit two more cars there and then fled on foot to the scene of the original accident.
The Metropolitan Washington Airport Police say they responded to reports of a three-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of the Dulles Toll Road near Exit 9 around 7:15 a.m. on July 29. Officers say the driver of one of the crashed vehicles stole the car of a passerby who'd stopped to check on the accident victims, injuring the passerby in the process.
About half an hour later, the stolen car was spotted at Dulles International Airport on the arrivals ramp, MWAA police say. When officers tried to stop the car, the driver tried to get away, hit two other vehicles in the process before abandoning his vehicle and fleeing on foot. He was caught near the scene of the original crash shortly after.
A MWAA police spokesperson said Andrew Tiller, 21, of Springfield Gardens in New York, was charged with three counts of felony hit and run, one misdemeanor count of hit and run, grand larceny, theft of auto by force (carjacking), felony eluding police, reckless driving (a misdemeanor), and possession of fictitious identification (a misdemeanor).
Despite the name provided by police, a person facing the same charges for the same offense on the same day is identified in Virginia's online court records as Alexander Tinnie.
A Loudoun Now report also identified the suspect as Tinnie and reported that he caused the initial crash by driving his BMW recklessly, striking two other vehicles.
He was released on bond earlier in August.
