Loudoun County School District Bans E-Bike Use On School Property

ASHBURN, VA – E-bike use is now banned on Loudoun County Public Schools' property, the school system announced with recently updated regulations

According to LCPS, no motorized or electric-powered personal transport devices may be operated on school grounds. Students may ride the devices to and from school, but once on school property, they must be walked and left parked in a designated area. Students must also walk the vehicles to the edge of school property before they can begin riding home.

The school system notes that individual schools may enact even stricter guidelines regarding e-bike use, and that families should follow guidance from their schools in those instances. LCPS also reminds families that children under the age of 15 must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, e-bike or other motorized vehicle.

LCPS acknowledged in the rule update that e-bikes and similar vehicles have been increasing in popularity, but that they've also been the subject of mounting safety concerns.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office launched a public education campaign and e-bike safety program in June after "seeing more people, both children and adults, riding bikes, scooters, e-bikes, and other devices in ways that put themselves and others at risk," the office explained.

The sheriff's office says it has seen an increase in reckless driving and accidents involving people on stand-up scooters, e-bikes, dirt bikes and other two-wheeled vehicles.
