LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – Loudoun County Public Schools has announced a new initiative to educate seventh-grade, eighth-grade, eighth grade and high school students about sexual misconduct on and offline and to encourage them to speak up, intervene or seek help.
The Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Title IX Office has launched the initiative, which aims to educate students about Title IX, a federal civil rights law intended to prevent sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, discrimination based on pregnancy or related conditions and other forms of sex-based misconduct at schools.
The planned training was first announced in August. LCPS has not said exactly when the training will be held.
The program will include a Title IX Student Bystander Training video and lesson intended to show students how Title IX issues can appear in everyday situations. The district says the lesson will include realistic and age-appropriate scenarios to educate students on harassment, unwanted touching, dating violence, stalking, inappropriate digital behavior, the sharing of nude or sexually explicit images, and discriminatory conduct. Students will be encouraged to speak up when they feel something is wrong, support their peers and seek help from trusted adults.
Parents may choose to preview the training and opt out. Preview sessions have been held over the last several months, with the last opportunity to preview the material scheduled for Nov. 5. The preview will include a question-and-answer session with LCPS Title IX Office staff.
Parents who want to preview the material are requested to RSVP by completing the LCPS Title IX: Bystander Training Video Parent Viewing Opportunity form here. A virtual meeting link will be emailed after the RSVP has been received.
More information can be provided by individual LCPS schools or the district Title IX Office here.
