ASHBURN, VA – The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) has announced the launch of a traffic initiative targeting aggressive driving in parts of the county with the highest traffic volume and the most motorist and pedestrian injuries, the office says.
Operation Highway Hound is intended to change dangerous driving behaviors, LCSO says. It describes the initiative as data-driven, with deputies deploying to predetermined and rotating locations. Enforcement priorities will include aggressive driving, excessive speed, distracted driving, reckless or dangerous driving, unsafe lane changes, following too closely, passing violations, failure to yield, running traffic signals, improper passing on the right and weaving through traffic, the office says.
In a release from LCSO, Sheriff Mike Chapman said, "Crashes are up, and so are pedestrian injuries." He explained that the initiative is intended to identify areas that could benefit most from an added presence and enforcement, as well as where LCSO might be able to change driving behavior for the better.
Operation Highway Hound will start this week in the area of Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn.
On Friday, Loudoun Now published a report highlighting accidents around Stone Bridge High School, saying that since 2018, 15 pedestrians and more cyclists have been hit by vehicles on roads immediately adjacent to the school, more than at any other high school in the county. In addition to driving behavior, the story points out potential deficiencies in the design of intersections around the school.
