Loudoun County Schools Seek Feedback On New Grading Policies

Loudoun County Public Schools are asking students and their families to share their thoughts on new grading policies implemented last year.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – Loudoun County Public Schools is asking parents, students and staff to weigh in on its grading policy, more than a year after the School Board approved changes affecting homework, test retakes and minimum grades.

The school division opened a public feedback period Wednesday to evaluate how the revised policy has worked since taking effect during the 2025-26 school year. Residents have until Nov. 18 to submit comments.

The Loudoun County School Board approved revisions to Policy 5030, Assessment and Grading, in April 2025 following extensive feedback from parents, teachers and students.

The changes included limiting the district's minimum grade of 50% to quarterly grades rather than individual assignments and eliminating that minimum for Advanced Placement courses. The board also reduced the ceiling for reassessments from 80% to 70%. Reassessments are now only allowed if a student earned a grade below 70% on the original assessment and demonstrates reasonable effort on required assignments. Another change allowed homework and other formative assessments to account for up to 10% of a student's quarterly grade.

Now, the district wants to hear whether the changes are working and what additional adjustments or clarifications might be needed.

LCPS is collecting feedback through the online ThoughtExchange platform, which allows participants to submit their opinions.

Middle and high school students, families and staff are encouraged to participate.

Residents can find information about the review and how to submit feedback through the LCPS website. Find the portal to share feedback on the grading policy here.

The deadline to participate is Nov. 18.
