Anna Catherine Briggs, 101

Anna Catherine Briggs, 101, of Lovettsville, VA, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Golden Living Rose Hill Nursing Home in Berryville, VA.

Anna was born Thursday, Dec. 9, 1909, in Washington, DC. She was the daughter of the late Robert Reynolds and the late Marie Hahn Reynolds.

She was the Founder of The National Humane Education Society (NHES), which operates The Briggs Animal Adoption Center (BAAC) in Charles Town, WV, and Peace Plantation Animal Sanctuary in Walton, NY. Anna has been honored with numerous awards, including: the Animal Humanitarian of the Year Award for the United States by the Animal Protective Institute of America; The Give Life Award from Living Free Animal Sanctuary for making the world a better place for animals; and as One of Loudoun County’s Outstanding Women for her accomplishments in the humane field.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Virginia A. Dungan, of Lovettsville; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband the late James P. Briggs in 1945. She was also predeceased by sons James P. Briggs II, Robert O. Briggs and John R. Briggs; her sister: Margaret Hutchison; brothers Jack Reynolds and George Reynolds; and 2 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle SE, in Leesburg, with the Rev. Stuart James officiating.

Interment will be held privately at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to NHES or BAAC, P.O. Box 340, Charles Town, WV 25414.
