Broker/Owner and Breast Cancer Survivor of Northern Virginia Real Estate Company Honored at Susan G. Komen Fashion Show

Broker/Owner, Phyllis Stakem of RE/MAX Select Properties, Inc. a Northern Virginia Real Estate Company is honored by RE/MAX International at recent Susan G. Komen Fashion Show Fundraiser at the RE/MAX National Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada
ASHBURN, VA, (March 15, 2013) - Phyllis Stakem, Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Select Properties, a Northern Virginia Real Estate Company, proudly walked the runway as one the breast cancer survivor models in the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® luncheon and fashion show at the RE/MAX R4 Convention.
Of nearly 7,000 RE/MAX agents who attended the annual convention in Las Vegas last month, a handful of breast cancer survivors within the RE/MAX family were selected to walk the pink runway in honor of their triumphs over the disease and the partnership between RE/MAX and Komen.
“A breast cancer diagnosis is a terrifying event, but shouldn’t be confused as a deadly one,” Phyllis said. “I was absolutely honored to be a part of such an empowering event. The amount of research and development for treatment that Komen has accomplished, and the ability to say that our agents helped, makes me proud.”
Phyllis’ first encounter with breast cancer was back in 1970 at the age of 18. A lump was found, removed and determined to be benign; however, she had a feeling this event would undoubtedly impact her future. She was diagnosed in 2011 and the road to recovery began with a bilateral mastectomy. She is, and has been, living every day to the fullest with her husband, three children, grandson and rescue Pug, Jack.
“I didn’t choose cancer,” Phyllis said. “But I did get to choose how I was going to handle it – and it turned out great. I truly hope all women realize that although we can’t control what our diagnosis will be, we can control our actions from that moment forward.”
Phyllis and all the RE/MAX Select Properties agents understand the importance of supporting causes in the community. “As a fellow breast cancer survivor, it’s always wonderful to hear survivors’ stories and be reminded how strong, beautiful and resilient we are,” said Ann Noel, RE/MAX Select Properties agent. “Hopefully seeing and hearing survivors will encourage all women, and men, young and old, to be vigilant.”
Phyllis will also be participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® on May 11, 2013 in Washington, D.C. For more information on registration visit http://globalrace.info-komen.org.
