John Joseph McGovern Jr., M.D., 70

John Joseph McGovern Jr., M.D., 70, died Sunday, July 1, 2012, in Richmond, VA. Dr. McGovern was born Dec. 23, 1941, in Camden, NJ, to the late John J. and Catherine Smith McGovern. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathleen Walsh McGovern. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Mt. Saint Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, MD, and received his medical degree from UVA. In 1972, Dr. McGovern opened Loudoun County's first pediatric office in Leesburg, where he continued to practice and raise his family until his retirement.

Dr. McGovern is survived by his four beloved children: Megan Anderson (Chad), Katie Lareau (Mark), and John J. McGovern III, all of Richmond, VA, and Colleen Gustavson (Scott) of Lincoln, VA; his brother: Chris McGovern of Myrtle Beach, SC; his sister: Mary Jane Davis of Sterling; and eight grandchildren: Finn, Carter, Eva, Claire, Declan, Rhett, Emmett and Britta.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, July 6, at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle SE, in Leesburg. A mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church/Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, 231 N. King St., in Leesburg.

Interment will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Leesburg.
