These flags were donated by the citizens and businesses of greater Ashburn to the Scouts and the Legion for honorable destruction.
Troop 2970’s Assistant Scout Master and member of the American Legion Post 2001, Bruce Biggs, announced the joint flag retirement ceremony will take place at the Hillside Park (Broadlands Amphitheater), 42935 Waxpool Rd., Ashburn, VA 20148 at 7pm on Thursday, October 9th. Chuck Loomis, Post 2001’s 1st Vice Commander stated, “The American Legion, at its first convention on Armistice Day/Veterans Day, November 11, 1919, adopted a resolution in support of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). That resolution, adopted by men and women who had returned from World War I the previous year, encouraged all Legion Posts to affiliate in some capacity with the BSA.”
2nd Vice Commander Bob O’Such, who will serve as Post 2001 Chaplain for this event, remarked, “Both of our organizations believe in a strong nation, strong family values, strong communities and service to others. Americanism is one of the American Legion’s pillars of freedom.”

Legion members Tag Greason, 32nd District Delegate to the Virginia General Assembly and Shawn Williams, Vice Chairman, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors/Broad Run District will be in attendance and participate in the ceremony.
Ashburn Legion Post Commander Charlie McKinney noted, “The affiliation between the American Legion and the BSA is built on the solid foundation of God and Country. We hold those same values handed down to us by our forefathers as sacred throughout our lives.”
This is a public event and the Ashburn/Broadlands community is especially encouraged to attend and witness this highly meaningful patriotic event. We look forward to seeing families and youth organizations in attendance. Everyone is encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and flashlights for the event.
