Ashburn Election Results: Northam Easily Trumps Gillespie
Loudoun County broke in a big way for ultimate winner Ralph Northam over Republican challenger Ed Gillespie. Check out other local races.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Asked Tuesday night by cable talk-show host Lawrence O'Donnell when he knew a winner in Virginia's 2017 gubernatorial might be declared far sooner than anyone expected, MSNBC ace political numbers-cruncher Steve Kornacki didn't hesitate. Namely, when the results started coming in from Loudoun County, "That's when I knew," Kornacki replied.
He added the county was a DC exurb in which Republican challenger Ed Gillespie needed to do well with reliably blue Fairfax County votes still out there, votes that almost certainly would favor the Democrat, Ralph Northam. Sure enough, Loudoun went big for the ultimate winner, with Northam thumping Gillespie 59-39. He received 69,710 votes to Gillespie's 46,278. Northam's overall margin over Gillespie was a surprisingly high nine points in a race that polls showed being considerably closer.
