Ashburn Health Inspections: 40 Dead Beetles Found At Concession Stand

The Loudoun County Health Department recorded violations at several restaurants around Ashburn and Sterling during recent inspections.

ASHBURN, VA — Health inspectors in Loudoun County recorded violations at several restaurants around Ashburn during recent visits. The most recently published round of inspections occurred between July 13 and July 19.

Most COVID-19 restrictions around the state have relaxed, so health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection

  • Hampton Inn Restaurant, 22700 Holiday Park Dr Sterling, VA 20166
    • Date inspected: July 13
    • Total violations: 4
      • Observed no certified food manager present on site or able to be called in.
      • Observed Handsink by the beginning of the kitchen to be leaking with a maximum temperature of 78F.
      • Observed the following food items in a state of cold holding out of temperature: Hardboiled Eggs (50F) in the Hardboiled Egg Holder at the buffet display, and yogurt at 49 in the yogurt display.
      • Observed Ice Machine’s Guard inside machine to be unclean with black residue.
  • Raunaq Mela, 45250 Catalina Ct Sterling, VA 20166
    • Date inspected: July 13
    • Total violations: 4
      • Observed 2 Hand sinks without paper towels or an approved method to dry hands.
      • Observed one bottle of "Raid Ant and Roach" labeled for "Indoor Household Use Only" in the dry storage section.
      • Observed ice scoop on top of ice bin with no container, and in use (throughout the day) tongs on the oven.
      • Equipment and Utensils, Air Drying Required. Observed water wet nesting in various containers pooling water by 3 VAT (small and large sizes, and one cooking pan.)

    • Date inspected: July 13
    • Total violations: 3
      • Employees and conditional employees are not aware of the reporting procedures concerning information about their health as they relate to the symptoms caused by illness, infection, or other source that is associated with an acute gastrointestinal illness or a lesion. Signed copies of form 1 B not provided during inspection.
      • In use open drinking containers stored in a manner that may contaminate food, food contact surfaces or utensils.
      • Chemical dishwasher not sanitizing dishes adequately after wash and rinse cycle.
  • Maison Culinaire Caterer, 504 Shaw Rd Suite 218 Sterling, VA 20166

    • Total violations: 2
      • Handwashing facilities near prep sink and employees restroom observed without paper towel.
      • Date marking not provided to the mixed dressings in the walk in refrigerator that was prepared at the facility.
  • Royal Palm Restaurant, 21800 Town Center Plaza #253 Sterling, VA 20164
    • Date inspected: July 14
    • Total violations: 7
      • Observed the Hot Water at the Hand Sink by the 3 VAT to not be functioning. Only the nozzle for the Cold Water gets a response.
      • Observed several food items throughout the facility not covered during a state of cold holding including, but not limited to Lentils and the following items from the Walk In underneath the mechanics: Chicken Rice, Cooked Green Okra Dish, and Haleem (Creamed Beef.)
      • Observed several food items not labeled, including, but not limited to: Chicken Rice, Cooked Okra, Haleem (Cream Beef), Boneless Beef, and Lentils.
      • Ice Used as Exterior Coolant, Prohibited as Ingredient. Observation: Potable Ice intended for consumption used as a medium for cooling the exterior surfaces of a Juice Bottle and Water Bottle.
      • Observed Tongs on the oven handle and Ice Scoop on top of Bin.
      • Observed: Bleach test strips for testing sanitizer at 3 compartment sink and Auto-Chlor Mod. A5 Dishwashing machine not available.
      • Observed two wet mops in the back inverted and pressed against the wall to dry.
  • Rio Cantina & Discoteca, 21800 Town Center Plaza #260 Sterling, VA 20166
    • Date inspected: July 14
    • Total violations: 7
      • Observed one child playing games on a tablet leaning against the prep table in back of house.
      • Observed the Hand Sink at the Upstairs Bar Area to be Incapable of Generating Hot Water.
      • Observed Raw Chicken stored over romaine lettuce and tomatoes.
      • Observed the microwave to have very slight food accumulation and rust on the interior.
      • Observed 3 fruit flies in establishment and 2 of the door to the exit to have white light shining through at the bottom allowing for possible pest entry. One is in the main kitchen, one is in the designated smoking room.
      • Observed Ice Scoop resting in old moisture on top of the ice machine.
      • Observed 2 mops by 3 VAT and 2 mops by mop sink to be soiled and leaning against the walls preventing proper airdrying and potentially providing an area for mold to grow on the walls.

      • Observed no less than 40 dead beetles throughout stand.

      • Observed piercing component of can opener to have accumulation of various food debris.
      • Observed External Ambient Air Thermometer on the Walk In to be missing the needle to show temperature. Unit has a thermometer placed in unit.
      • Observed soiled mops hanging with mop part on top of the bottom of various mop buckets preventing proper air drying and potentially soiling equipment.

      • Microwave has large amount of food accumulation.
      • Observed Tongs stored on top of the Qualite Hot Holding Unit and Tongs stored hanging on door of Super Pretzel Model 850C (used for pizza) with half of tongs contacting inside of the handle.

      • This food establishment does not have documentation that an employee, with management and supervisory responsibility, is a Certified Food Protection Manager.
      • No irreversible temperature measuring device provided for the dish machine.

      • Raw beef stored under raw chicken, cream cheese stored under raw beef in walk in refrigerator.
      • Food items are not being cooled properly- food stored in large, deep pans after cooking.
      • Back door observed open throughout inspection
      • Prep units along grill line are not being kept closed when not in use.

    • Total violations: 10
      • Food employees observed drinking from open cup in food prep areas (in front of the grill and in pizza prep area).
      • Food employees observed touching the ready to eat pizza with bare hands.
      • Handwashing facility in the bar area observed without soap.
      • No disposable towels were provided at the hand washing lavatory in the food prep areas.
      • Inadequate record keeping system of mussels tags in that PIC unable to provide the tags for previously used mussels in last 90 days. As per the PIC the facility does not keep the shellfish tags to 90 days.
      • Raw animal food holding in a manner that may cause cross contamination of to ready-to-eat food (RTE) in that several packs of raw pork placed next to ice cream in one door reach in refrigerator.
      • Chemical sanitizer at the bar is not sanitizing adequately.
      • Several food items such as raw chicken, raw shrimp, raw beef, cut leafy greens, sliced tomatoes, cheese, rice, quinoa and raw tuna registered between 44°F-54°F in front food prep area. Several units registered operating between 44°F to 55°F.
      • Several live fruitflies and flies observed near the beer cooler in main floor, in food prep area and dry goods and can storage room in second floor.
      • Several low boy refrigeration units (low boy refrigerator infront of the grill, the satay station, the fryer and salad station) holding temperature control for safety food items registered at a range of 44-55°F.
  • Roadhouse Momo & Grill, 44050 Ashburn Shopping Plaza Ashburn, VA 20147
    • Date inspected: July 19
    • Total violations: 7
      • When prompted by EHS, no staff were able to identify the 6 major food borne illnesses or symptoms associated with food borne illness. Knowledge of cold holding, hot holding and internal cook temperatures was also unknown.
      • No Certified Food Protection Manger is overseeing the preparation/handling/storage or cooking of foods. No certificate - Normal PIC was not easily reachable.
      • The facility does not have verifiable means that food employees have been trained in the signs and symptoms of food borne illness and how to properly report them.
      • The hand washing sink to the left of the three basin sink is blocked by a large piece of equipment. The Hand sink to the left of the dish machine in front does not have soap or hand drying provisions and had multiple items stored within the basin. The hand sink on the line to the left does not have any hand drying provisions.
      • Raw meats (pork, beef, chicken) was observed stored over ready to eat (RTE) sauces, and dough in the walk in cooler.
      • Date marking of time/temperature for safety (TCS) foods and Ready to eat (RTE) is not being done.
      • Several spray bottles with liquids within them were observed throughout the facility with no labeling.
