ASHBURN, VA — The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office arrested a man and charged him with embezzling more than $6,000 from a swim club in Ashburn, the sheriff's office said Thursday. The thefts allegedly began in January and were reported to the sheriff's office in late March.

Michael J. Costanzo, 40, of Ashburn was arrested Monday and charged with felony embezzlement from the Ashburn Farm Barracudas swim team after an investigation by the LCSO's Financial Crimes Unit. The sheriff's office said its investigation determined Costanzo embezzled more than $6,000 from the swim team by transferring monies from the club through his personal PayPal account.

The incident was brought to the LCSO's attention on March 27, the sheriff's office said.

In an email to Patch, an official with the swim club said its board worked with the sheriff's office on the investigation. The club did not have any other comment about the case.

The Ashburn Farm Barracudas compete in the Colonial Swim League, with all home meets taking place at the Summerwood Pool in Ashburn, according to the team's website.

Costanzo was released from the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on a $5,000 secured bond.
