Ashburn: Why are we gaining weight? Hmmm...
Scientific studies prove we are self-inflicting health problems... and I thought it was telemarketers.

Fifty years ago, we averaged 1700 calories a day. THEN,...
We ate more and more outside the home. Instead of having simple meals, prepared well, we eat processed food that is full of bad things. AND, food is cheaper than ever -- but not good food, processed food. Despite candy bars costing well over a dollar, we are able to eat less expensively and with poorer quality than ever. AND, people drink more soda and fruit juices, which are loaded with sugar. Water is the answer there. AND, we are more sedentary in our jobs and lifestyles. AND, finally, studies show eating with others can increase calories unnecessarily. Surely, going out with friends, you realize eating more and chatting amiably leads to eating more and more.
So, we now average over 2700 calories a day.
