Ashburn Xtreme Select Mites Win Congressional Cup

Local youth ice hockey team, ages, 6-9, wins tournament after dramatic comeback.

The Ashburn Xtreme Select Mite A team went 5-0 in the Congressional Cup and brought home the championship trophy Monday.

Down 4-2 at the end of the second period in the final game, the Xtreme players were exhausted. With the kids’ heads hanging low, the coaching staff told them to be proud of what they had accomplished already, to keep their feet moving and not to give up.

The young athletes, ages 6 to 9, dug deep and played their little hearts out, outscoring the NJ Rockets 6-0 in the third period to win the championship 8-4. On the final buzzer the kids threw their sticks and gloves on the ice and piled on the goalie.
