Tanner was inspired to start a clean up of Beaverdam Creek Reservoir for Step Up Loudoun Youth because she noticed broken glass and debris at Beaverdam Creek Reservoir whenever she went hiking there. At least 100 volunteers are expected on April 1st. Starting in February, Lacey began recruiting local civics groups including Cub Scout Pack 100 and Boy Scout Troop 1600. Additionally Girl Scout Units 70-1 and 70-7 will be in attendance.

Tanner is also reaching out to local citizens and area youth about her clean up efforts at Beaverdam Creek Reservoir through an Instagram account that she has titled See.Ya.at.the.Resi. She is currently running a call for testimonials to include photos and a quote about what Beaverdam Creek Reservoir means to the individual and the community. She has received submissions from ages 7 through 70.

As part of Tanner’s project for Step Up Loudoun Youth, she needed to meet with probable stakeholders for Beaverdam Creek Reservoir. She started with a meeting with Keep Loudoun Beautiful, whose mission is to maintain the natural beauty and visual quality of Loudoun County, to encourage and educate citizens and to improve Loudoun’s trash disposal and prevent illegal dumping. Unfortunately, Beaverdam Creek Reservoir has been the site of illegal dumping for years. Previous cleanups have removed household appliances, furniture, clothing, and personal care trash from the park and reservoir. Keep Loudoun Beautiful will be providing clean up supplies including recycling and debris bags, gloves, and trash pinchers.
In March, Tanner presented to Loudoun County Supervisor Tony Buffington about the April 1st clean up of Beaverdam Creek Reservoir, as well as about her plans to implement an Adopt-A-Trail program as a long term solution to maintain the park’s trails and cleanliness. Supervisor Buffington provided Tanner with insight on civics groups and organizations who share an interest in keeping Beaverdam Creek Reservoir clean and maintained, including NOVA Parks and Loudoun Water.

Dale Riggs, the park manager for Beaverdam Creek Reservoir and the Brambleton Golf Course had great input for Tanner as well. Riggs encouraged Tanner to invite volunteers to the April 1st clean up and suggested that the Adopt-a-Trail program would be a fruitful solution to the ongoing debris and trail maintenance. Tanner is currently putting together the Adopt-A-Trail program for Beaverdam Creek Reservoir, which would divide the park trails into 1/2 mile segments. Adoptees would have a sign designating their portion of the trail and would be responsible for hosting recurring clean ups of their trail.

Additionally, the Brambleton Community Association met with Tanner to offer their support of the April 1st clean up as well as to commit to helping keep Beaverdam Creek Reservoir a clean amenity for the Brambleton community. The Brambleton Community Association is looking forward to adopting a portion of the trails at Beaverdam. Brambleton Kids Care Director Christine Elansary is spearheading this effort with HOA Manager Rick Stone to encourage Brambleton residents and their children to help keep Beaverdam clean.

Beginning at 11 a.m. on April 1st, the kick off of Clean Up of Beaverdam Creek Reservoir will welcome volunteers through 2 p.m. Volunteers will meet at 22377 Belmont Ridge Rd, Ashburn, VA 20148 Prizes donated by local businesses, including Blue Ridge Grill, Eclips Salon, Harris Teeter and Bicycle Outfitters, will be available to volunteers who collect the most trash.

Tanner recommends that volunteers wear a hat and sunscreen as well as tick and bug spray. Volunteers should also bring a reusable water bottle and work gloves. Beaverdam Creek Reservoir is accessible from Belmont Ridge Road as well as from Evergreen Mills Road. Participants should look for the Clean Up Beaverdam Creek Reservoir Sign-in table at the parking lot of the National Parks and Recreation Association.
