Briar Woods Swimmers Perform Well at States
The girls finish 3rd overall while the boys break several school records.
The Briar Woods girls swim team came home with a 3rd -place finish in the Virginia State Swimming Championships this past Friday and Saturday, well ahead of the boys’ 13th-place, but record-setting, finish. Competing against hundreds of the best swimmers the state has to offer, Briar Woods turned in some amazing performances and came away with numerous school records and top finishes.
On the girls’ side, all of Briar Woods’ swimmers had outstanding preliminaries Friday and reached the finals on Saturday. Alli Haufler led the way, capturing 3rd in the 200 Free and breaking a school record by more than 2 seconds, she then came back in the 100 Fly taking 2nd in the state.
Kristin Haufler also had an outstanding meet, taking 6th in the 100 Free and tying for 7th in the 50 Free with teammate Caleigh Hensley. Hensley also had a great swim in the 100 Backstroke, taking 13th place.

Caitlyn Brown, in her first State meet, scored a solid performance, placing 10th in the 200 Free and 13th in the 500 Free. Another freshman, Erica Comm, showed her skills, making the finals in both the 50 Free and 100 Free, and placing 16th in both. Lizzie Mittan had a terrific meet taking 8th in the 500 Free.
On relays, the team of Brown, Mittan, Comm, and Veronica Smith captured 12th in the 200 Free. In the 200 IM Relay the team of Hensley, Comm and both Hauflers finished 3rd, while Brown, Hensley and both Hauflers combined to capture 2nd in the 400 Free Relay.

On the boy’s side, Matt Nielsen led the way with a 4th-place finish in the 500 Freestyle, breaking the school record by an astonishing 17 seconds. Nielsen then captured another 4th-place finish with a second school record in the 100 Breast.
Philip Mardock also had a very strong showing making the finals in the 200 Freestyle and finishing in 12th place.
The boys relay teams also had terrific performances, setting two school records. Nielsen, Steffen Vater, Philip Mardock and Eric Guessford captured 9th in the 200 IM, while Geussford, Mardock, Nielsen and Brennan Maxwell combined to take 8th in 400 Free.
Congratulations to all swimmers for an outstanding, recording-setting year. Your coaches and school are very proud of all your accomplishments.
