Broad Run Wins Sports Plus Softball Tournament
Lady Spartans Again Take The Title For Annual Richmond Tournament

Broad Run High School came back from an early loss to Nandua (Nandua 8, Broad Run 5) to win three straight games in the Sports Plus Softball Tournament and claim the championship March 23-24 in Richmond. The Spartans defeated St. Francis Prep (NY) (11-10), Rappahanock (6-5), and Monacan (11-6) on their way to the title.
Senior pitcher Libby Griffis was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Senior Erin Cassidy and sophomore Abigail Neff also received awards for outstanding performance during the tournament.
The Spartans are currently 3-1 this season. Below are recaps from each of Broad Run's tournament games:

Nandua 8, Broad Run 5
Broad Run fell short to Nandua in the opening game of the tournament after opening up scoring in the second inning, when Alexa Caras singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

In the top of the third inning, Nandua tied things up at one.
Broad Run scored three runs in the seventh inning. Lauren Mizelle, Sara Kelly, and Griffis each had RBIs in the big inning.
Griffis, Kelly, and Neff all collected multiple hits for Broad Run. Griffis went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Broad Run in hits.
Broad Run 11, St. Francis Prep 10
Broad Run nabbed the lead late in the game in an 11-10 victory over St. Francis Prep on Friday. The game was tied at nine with Broad Run batting in the top of the eighth when Mizelle doubled on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs.
Despite falling down by five runs in the fifth inning, St. Francis Prep tried to fight back and scored six runs in the failed comeback.
Kelly started the game for Broad Run. She struck out three batters and allowed six hits over five innings. Griffis pitched Broad Run to victory and allowed three hits and zero runs over three innings. Mizelle and Katrina Potak had multiple hits for Broad Run. Mizelle led Broad Run with three hits in four at bats.
Broad Run 6, Rappahannock 5
Broad Run defeated Rappahannock 6-5 on Saturday thanks to a walk-off double. The game was tied at five with Broad Run batting in the bottom of the seventh when Mizelle doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run.
After falling down by four runs in the fourth inning, Rappahannock fought back and scored five runs in the failed comeback.
Griffis led Broad Run to victory on the pitcher's mound. She lasted seven innings, allowing ten hits and five runs while striking out two.
Griffis and Lauren Enstrom each had multiple hits for Broad Run. Enstrom and Griffis each collected two hits to lead Broad Run.
Championship: Broad Run 11, Monacan 6
Broad Run weathered a push by Monacan in the third inning and won 11-6 on Saturday.
The base paths were crowded in this high-scoring game. Broad Run opened up scoring in the first inning. Griffis doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.
After Monacan scored one run in the top of the second, Broad Run answered when Neff singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Broad Run took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Mizelle singled on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs, Kelly singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run, and Griffis’s sac fly scored one run for Broad Run Spartans Varsity.
Kelly was credited with the victory for Broad Run. She went seven innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking one.
Broad Run tallied 15 hits in the game. Kelly, Casey Kramer, Mizelle, Jackie Tenney, and Neff each collected multiple hits for Broad Run. Kramer and Kelly both had three hits to lead Broad Run.
