Two Local Companies Will Help Build New Commanders Stadium

ASHBURN, VA – The Washington Commanders have selected the partners who will build their new stadium in Washington, DC, the team announced.

In a statement, the Commanders said they’d chosen the McLean-based Clark Construction Group, the DC-based Smoot Construction Company and the Minneapolis-based Mortenson and Company as the team to build the 65,000-seat domed stadium on their RFK campus, the site of the former RFK Stadium, in Washington, DC.

Construction is expected to start in summer 2027, according to the team, and the stadium is scheduled to open in 2030.

The Washington Business Journal reports that the project is anticipated to cost $3.8 billion.

Clark Construction signs are ubiquitous in the Washington Metropolitan Area. The WBJ notes that Clark and Smoot helped build the capital’s Nationals Park as well as what is now called Capital One Arena in Chinatown, which Clark is also now helping to renovate. Smoot was also involved in building CareFirst Arena and Clark helmed the construction of the Commanders’ current Northwest Stadium in Landover, MD. Mortenson’s portfolio includes Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Energizer Park in St. Louis, the Continental Coliseum in Oklahoma City and more.
