Computer Phone Scam Thwarted in Ashburn: Police

A person was told by "Rick from Microsoft" that the resident's computer software needed to be replaced, according the LCSO. It was a scam.

ASHBURN, VA — So a resident in the 20000 block of Pleasant Terrace gets a phone call late last week. The caller identifies himself as "Rick from Microsoft," according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

"Rick" says the software on the resident's computer is out of date and needs to be replaced. To do so, the resident is told to purchase iTunes gift cards and provide the codes to "Rick."

The resident smells a rat, hangs up and calls police, who confirm the phone call was an attempted scam.
