Crossing Guard To Serve Ashburn School

Move is unprecedented, says Loudoun County sheriff.

Responding to concerns from parents, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman has assigned a crossing guard to Creighton’s Corner Elementary School until the end of the school year in June.

The school is part of the Brambleton community, west of Dulles Airport.

The move is an unprecedented interim solution to a traffic issue, the sheriff said in a statement. Crossing guards are not normally assigned to school zones until surrounding property is turned over to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), crosswalks are painted and a crossing guard position is officially applied for by the Loudoun County Public Schools.

But the need was identified after Chapman discussed crosswalk concerns with parents of children attending Creighton’s Corner Elementary School, as well as Tony Buffington, vice president of the Brambleton Home Owners Association.

“Our children’s safety is of paramount importance,” Chapman said in the statement. “I am committed to do whatever it takes to resolve this issue in the near term, and ensure that we have a permanent solution, as well.”

The crossing guard position is expected to be temporarily filled after children return from spring break on Tuesday.
