Cryptocurrency, Bank, Job, Law Enforcement Scams: Loudoun Crime Report
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating several scams, including one instance where a scammer impersonated a police officer.
LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating several scams from around the region. The scams varied in focus from fake job offers to law enforcement impersonators.
Three different scams were reported on Tuesday, the sheriff's office said in a report. A fourth scam was reported on Tuesday.
In Chantilly, a man told police that he received a job offer through an email. He received a check to purchase office supplies and was told to send money through Zelle. The man sent the money and later learned that the check was fake.

In Ashburn, a man said he received a message from someone talking about cryptocurrency. After a discussion with the person, the man deposited money into what he thought was a legitimate account. He later learned that he'd been scammed.
Elsewhere in Ashburn, another resident said she received a call from someone who said they were from Amazon and there was a problem with her account. The caller said they would contact law enforcement and help her file a police report.

The scammer then transferred the woman to another person, who claimed to be a "patrolman" with the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. The fake patrolman sent a photo of his credentials, and the victim realized they were fake.
On Wednesday, a resident in Lovettsville reported another scam. She told police that she received a text from someone who claimed to be with her bank. The texter said their were several fraudulent charges on her account.
The scammer asked the woman to reset her password and provided a passcode. The victim then learned that the suspect removed money from her bank account.
Anyone who is targeted by a scam can report it to the FTC online.
