Cyclist Injured In Hit-And-Run In Ashburn On Saturday: Police

A man on a bicycle was seriously injured on Saturday morning when he was hit by a car, police said. The vehicle that hit him fled the scene.

ASHBURN, VA — A man on a bicycle suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a vehicle in Ashburn on Saturday morning. The vehicle that hit him fled the scene after the crash, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said the crash occurred around 1:10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14. The cyclist was struck at the intersection of Ashburn Farm Parkway and Farmingdale Drive.

A resident in the area reported hearing a large crash around 1 a.m. They then found the victim in the intersection, police said.

"The victim was struck by an unknown vehicle as he was riding his electric bicycle," the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office wrote in an update to the public. "The driver of the striking vehicle left the scene."

A detailed description of the other vehicle was not immediately available. However, authorities said it may have damage to its windshield and hood.

Police only identified the victim as "an adult male." He suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital for further treatment. The sheriff's office did not provide any further updates about his condition.

The hit-and-run is now being investigated by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or may be able to identify the other vehicle is encouraged to call Investigator Alpy at 703-777-1021.

On July 1, 2021, a new law designed to protect bicyclists took effect. The law requires drivers to change lanes when passing cyclists, and allows bicyclists to ride side-by-side.

Still, Virginia's DMV offers several tips to help cyclists on roads stay safe. Cyclists are encouraged to use hand signals, stop at intersections, and ride defensively.
