Fatal Crash Leads To Reckless Driving Charge For Sterling Man: Police

A man from Sterling has been charged with reckless driving after a crash in Fauquier County in August, Virginia State police said.

VIRGINIA — A Sterling man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that occurred in Fauquier County last month, Virginia State Police said. The man's tractor-trailer collided with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle at the intersection Route 17 and Route 29.

Police identified the motorcycle rider as 77-year-old John Selby of Bealeton. He died at the scene of the crash.

Alexei Plavan, a 64-year-old man from Sterling, was driving the tractor-trailer. He was charged with reckless driving.

He was initially arrested and taken to the Culpeper County Jail before he was released on bond. If convicted, Plavan could face up to a year in prison.

The crash occurred around 1 p.m. on Aug. 27. Police said Plavan's tractor-trailer was travelling north on Route 29 when he failed to stop at a red light at Route 17.

It then collided with Selby's motorcycle in the intersection. Selby had a green light, Virginia State Police investigators said.

Authorities said the crash is still being investigated.
