Tempo is a key component of a good golf swing. If you watched the Masters last weekend, you undoubtedly heard the announcers comment on the great tempo and rhythm the PGA TOUR players had (or didn’t have).
The reason the pros have great tempo is because they know they only get to hit the ball once during a swing and they want to make it count. Their goal is to deliver all their energy at the ball; you can’t hit the ball on the backswing.
The next time you are practicing on the range, try this drill to work on your tempo:

- Set up to golf ball and then place another golf ball directly behind the club head. Your club head will be sandwiched between two balls with only enough space for the club head.
- From that point, take a swing brushing the golf ball behind club head on your takeaway then finish your swing and hit the remaining ball.
The goal is to gently brush the back ball away on the backswing. You can use your first try at this drill as your baseline. If the ball goes whizzing back, you know your take away is too quick. When the first ball is going back at a controlled pace, you have the proper start to your backswing.
This drill should help you feel more controlled during the backswing. It also allows you to feel how the speed gradually gathers at the start of the downswing and increases into the ball for a powerful strike.
