Golf Tip: Hitting the Ball Fat?

Check out this tip to make sure your knees and balance are properly set.

Are you hitting the ball fat? If so, work on the following tip to improve your impact position.

Many golfers I see are trying to kick their right knee (for a right-handed player) toward the ball at impact. They feel this lunging motion is powerful and believe it will help them propel the golf ball.

However, this move actually causes the upper body to fall backward, leading to them release the club too early hit a fat shot.

Instead of trying to kick the knee in, work on having your right hip joint lead the right knee at impact. If you notice most good ball strikers have wide knees at impact; this helps with balance, stability and power.

Take a second and stand up. Allow your knee to kick in to your other knee, it won’t feel powerful. Now, just stand straight up and shift your weight toward your left foot. You didn’t do much, and you still feel balanced and powerful. That is the feeling you want in your golf swing.

I want to stress that there is rotation in the golf swing; however, most people are trying to rotate too soon.

Take a few practice shots feeling like you have shifted into your left side with your right hip joint leading your knee then rotate. This move will allow you to hit powerful, crisp shots.

Good luck and good golf!
