High School Seniors Spread Love for Economics

Press release for Edunomics, an economics, business, and finance nonprofit started by two high school seniors.

Sahith Malyala, a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and Sahil Yedulla, a senior at Broad Run High School, are sharing their love of economics with local middle schools through their organization Edunomics. Started this past summer, Edunomics brings global economics, business, and finance to middle school students to provide them a unique opportunity at a young age. It currently has chapters in Eagle Ridge Middle School and Farmwell Station Middle School.

Engaging students interactively is at the core of Edunomics’ classes. Every meeting covers a fundamental topic in either economics, business, or finance and finishes with an interactive activity that demonstrates the topic. For example, during Week 1, students play the “Village Game.” The objective of the activity is to collect a certain number of each candy by trading excess candies with other groups with a few rule changes. This particular game illuminates the real world applications of supply and demand.

Edunomics invites guest speakers, such as bank representatives, businessmen, and professors, to relate experiences to the students. Also, the students participate in a stock market game each semester with prizes for first and last place (placing last is hard)!
