Homelessness On The Rise In Loudoun County, According To Annual Count

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Homelessness in Loudoun County increased by 24 percent from 2021 to 2022, according to the the Loudoun County Continuum of Care. Officials released the results of their annual point-in-time county this month.

The count is conducted every January. The one-day event is held across D.C. region jurisdictions to provide a snapshot of people experiencing homelessness in the area.

In 2022's count, 99 people in Loudoun County were dealing with homelessness. The number represents a 24 percent increase over 2021's count, according to officials.

Since 2018, homelessness has declined in seven of the nine jurisdictions who participate in the annual count. Loudoun County has seen a 26 percent decrease in homelessness since 2018.

“While the overall trend of homelessness is decreasing, the increase in Loudoun from 2021 highlights the challenges that members of our community continue to face during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Loudoun County Department of Family Services Director Ina Fernández. “We will continue to use a variety of tools, including the Point-In-Time Count to refine our services to support the most vulnerable in our community who are experiencing a housing crisis.”

Across the region, homelessness decreased by 8 percent from January 2021 to January 2022, according to the point-in-time count.
