Huge Crowd at Loudoun Lyme 5K

The event, along with various other Lyme-focused projects in the county, aim to raise awareness about a disease that even the medical community seems to know little about.

Racers from the region and beyond gathered at the National Conference Center in Lansdowne Sunday to raise awarness about and money to fight Lyme disease. About 900 walkers and runners participated, according to coordinators of DryHome's Loudoun Lyme 5K.

Loudoun is a hotspot for Lyme regionally, reporting 261 cases in 2011. That represents about 25 percent of all cases reported in Virginia, according to Loudoun County's web page on Lyme.
