Hundreds Gather Tuesday Night To Mourn Student Who Died Suddenly

Illness that felled Broad Run softball player not yet diagnosed; classmates express grief on social media.

Hundreds of people turned out Tuesday evening at Broad Run High School in Ashburn to mourn a student who died after a sudden illness.

Madison Small was rushed to the hospital Monday night and died early Tuesday, according to WUSA Channel 9, a Washington TV station. She was a senior at Broad Run and captain of the varsity softball team.

The cause of Small’s death is under investigation by the state medical examiner, according to the director of Loudoun County’s Health Department and a spokesman for Loudoun County Public Schools, Channel 9 reported. There’s no reason to believe that there is a health danger to students, staff or community, according to officials.

The high school’s principal sent a letter Tuesday to students, parents and staff to inform them of Small’s death, according to the Loudoun Times.

On Broad Run’s softball field Tuesday night, a hastily-organized vigil drew hundreds of mourners, Channel 9 reported. The solemn program was led by Madison’s softball teammates, who described her as a great leader, friend and role model.
