INMED Launches Latest Aquaponics Project to Feed School Children in South Africa

In partnership with the Mondelēz International Foundation, INMED Partnerships for Children and INMED South Africa launched their latest commercial aquaponic system at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The event was attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of NMMU, the District Director of Education, representatives from Office of the Mayor, principals of 10 schools and dozens of students, as well as the senior management from Mondelēz South Africa and INMED South Africa.

“Everyone was thrilled to see and learn about aquaponics, especially school children and their teachers,” noted Unathi Sihlahla, Program Director of INMED Health in Action South Africa. The Port Elizabeth aquaponic system is expected to produce approximately 28 tons of various greens (or 4.4 tons of tomatoes) and approximately 2.1 tons of fish annually to supplement the nutritional needs of school children in several disadvantaged communities throughout the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area.
