LCPS Parents' Group Proposals New 2028-2029 School Calendar Option: Report

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Loudoun County School Board will meet Tuesday afternoon to decide on the 2028-2029 school calendar, but a group of parents has put forward a new last-minute option, according to a new report.

Loudoun Now reports that a group of parents in Lansdowne have proposed their own school calendar, based on an option proposed by Leesburg district board member Lauren Shernoff.

According to the outlet, the proposed calendar would have school begin on Aug. 28, 2028, and end on June 1, 2029, with a winter break from Dec. 21 to Jan. 3 and a spring break from April 2-6. The calendar would have 165 instructional days, fewer than the 180 Virginia law sets as the standard for the school year but would have more than the required 990 instructional hours, the outlet reports. It includes seven federal holidays and five religious or cultural holidays.

The Loudoun County School Board is considering changes to the school calendar because of complaints that accumulating cultural and religious holidays have unreasonably extended the school year. The board considered eight calendar options at its last meeting on Sept. 8 and remained divided after that session.

The board’s agenda for its meeting Tuesday afternoon includes nine calendar options, five developed by staff and four put forth by board members, including Shernoff. The community-proposed calendar does not currently appear on the agenda.
