To help reduce the risk of check fraud, the Leesburg Police Department recommends:

  • Use electronic payment methods whenever possible.
  • Avoid leaving outgoing mail containing checks in residential mailboxes for extended periods.
  • Use permanent black gel ink when writing checks, as it is more difficult to alter.
  • Monitor bank accounts regularly for unauthorized transactions.
  • Report suspicious activity or unauthorized withdrawals to your financial institution immediately.

Residents who mail checks are encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly review account statements for any unusual activity. Individuals who believe they may have been the victim of check fraud should contact their financial institution and file a police report as soon as possible.
