Loudoun County Teacher Named Mount Vernon History Teacher Of The Year

Nellie Beaman, a sixth-grade teacher at Eagle Ridge Middle School, was named Mount Vernon's History Teacher of the Year.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — A sixth grade teacher at Eagle Ridge Middle School in Loudoun County was named the History Teacher of the Year for the D.C. area by Mount Vernon.

Nellie Beaman will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a free field trip to George Washington's Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon is owned and maintained by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, the oldest national historic preservation organization in the United States. Every year, the association said it recognizes one teacher who "brings creativity and passion to their teaching, generates a love of learning, and deepens their students’ understanding and appreciation of history."

Beaman teaches sixth grade history and is in her twelfth year of classroom teaching. Beaman also provides mentorship and curriculum development within the school district while remaining involved with programs from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the George Washington Teacher Institute.

"Her love and passion ignite a spark of curiosity and a love of history in her students," one colleague wrote to Mount Vernon in a nomination form for Beaman. "She is constantly finding ways to bring history to life for them."

A panel of education staff from Mount Vernon reviewed nominations before selecting Beaman as this year's winner. They began selecting a new teacher each year in 2008.

Allison Wickens is Mount Vernon's Vice President for Education.

"Mount Vernon is indebted to great history teachers," Wickens said in a news release. "It is our honor each year to champion leaders in this field. We are proud to showcase the importance of their work and the lasting impact of their daily efforts."

Another Loudoun County teacher, James Erik Sassak from Blue Ridge Middle School, was recognized as this year's runner-up. He will receive a $500 cash prize and distance learning programs for his students.
