Man Escapes ICE Custody, Recaptured Near Dulles

Update: A man headed to Dulles International Airport to be deported escaped from ICE custody and was recaptured.

(Updated 1:36 p.m. Tuesday) ASHBURN, VA—A man headed to Dulles International Airport to be deported escaped Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody in Sterling Monday, NBC Washington reported. He was recaptured about three hours later by Loudoun County Sheriff's deputies near Mercure Circle and Old Ox Road.

Carlos Rivas-Mendez escaped from a car traveling to the airport on Dulles Greenway near Old Ox Road. He ran into a wooded area, officials told NBC Washington. Officials say he assaulted the transport personnel and escaped from the car. He is charged with assault and battery.

Virginia State Police and ICE were searching for Rivas-Mendez and have released a photo and description. He is described as Hispanic, 5 foot 11, with fair skin. He was wearing a white T-shirt, camouflage shorts and no shoes, with a handcuff around one wrist.
