Police Arrest Man for Shooting Windows at Commercial Buildings in Herndon and Fairfax

Police have arrested the suspect in reports of shots fired at several commercial buildings in the Herndon area.

Matthew Charles Malacarne, age 29, of Herndon was arrested on Sept. 25 on charges of destruction of property, according to Herndon Police.

“A detailed investigation has led to the arrest of Matthew Charles Malacarne, believed to be responsible for a series of destruction cases where commercial buildings were struck by bullets,” stated a Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) news release. “Detectives from Fairfax County and the Towns of Herndon and Leesburg have been jointly investigating similar cases in each jurisdiction.”

On Monday, Sept. 21, an employee of a business, located in the 2200 block of Corporate Drive in Herndon, reported to police that several pieces of equipment were damaged during the evening hours of Sept. 17.

During investigation, detectives determined that the suspect intentionality damaged a security camera, a key lockbox, a satellite dish, and shut down the building elevators, damaging thousands of dollars worth of equipment, FCPD reported.

After clues led to Malacarne, police obtained a felony destruction of property warrant for the destruction case on Sept. 17. He was taken into custody on September 25.

On the same day, a search warrant was executed to search his home, 811 Locust St., in Herndon.

Based on police investigation, additional arrest warrants were obtained in connection to several commercial buildings in Fairfax and Herndon, police reports stated.

Those incidents included:

• On Aug. 3, around 10 p.m. in the 2200 block of Monroe Street, Fairfax, shots were fired while employees were in the building.
• Another incident occurred between the hours of 10 p.m. on Aug. 4, and 8 a.m. on Aug. 5, at a business in the 2200 block of Corporate Drive in Fairfax, according to FCPD.
• The charges placed in Herndon are also for destruction of property and shooting into an occupied building. One incident occurred on Wordgate Drive on July 30 and another incident was reported on Sept. 2 on Elden Street, stated the Herndon Police Department.
• Two additional incidents that were reported in Herndon on July 24 and Sept. 2 in the same general area are still under investigation.

Malacarne is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.
