Power Goes Down for About 4,000 in Ashburn Wednesday Morning

A separate Smith Circle outage from the storm remained until nearly noon Tuesday.

A third power Dominion Virginia Power outage affected about 4,000 customers in the Ashburn area after, for a second day, an equipment problem knocked down underground lines.

The outages, all of which are considered unrelated, began Monday evening when equipment failure caused about 5,600 resident to lose electricity for several hours. While power was restored for many by 8 p.m., a storm knocked out power again for more than 10,000 homes in the region. While electricity was restored for most by 8 a.m. the next day, several pockets of homes had to wait a bit longer. Several homes on Smith Circle in Ashburn remained out until after 11 a.m. Tuesday.

A resident along Smith Circle said the power there also went out last Friday for about 12 hours. The same resident said a tree appeared to have caused the outage Monday night. The tree snapped, causing a fire and an explosion, that person said.

Le-Ha Anderson, a spokeswoman with Dominion, said the two problems with underground power lines were unrelated and not a sign of additional failures to come. In fact, no problems were located that would have caused today’s outage.

“This isn’t a widespread problem,” she said, adding that no repairs were required for the Wednesday morning outage. In Monday’s underground outage, cable that failed had to be replaced.
