Sheriff's Office: Deputy Faces Simple Assault Charge

The misdemeanor summons results from an investigation by the Virginia State Police.

The Virginia State Police have charged a Loudoun County sheriff’s deputy with simple assault for an incident in June, the sheriff’s office announced Friday.

Deputy John W. Gregory, 31, a 10-year-veteran, was served the misdemeanor summons on Friday, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Gregory is a patrol deputy, and he remains on routine paid administrative leave.

The charge stems from a June 14 incident that took place during the arrest of an unnamed individual, the sheriff’s office said. It did not release further details of the arrest, “due to the ongoing investigation and pending court proceedings.”

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office became aware of the June incident last month from a civil inquiry, according to the statement. After an initial review of the incident by Sheriff Mike Chapman, and in consultation with the Office of the Loudoun County Attorney and the Office of the Loudoun Commonwealth’s Attorney, the sheriff placed the deputy on administrative leave.

Along with the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Chapman asked the Virginia State Police to conduct an independent investigation to determine if criminal violations occurred, the statement said. Chapman also directed the sheriff’s office to conduct an internal investigation.
