St. David's Episcopal hosts Honduran event November 8
El Hogar Mission for Children in Poverty in Honduras
Children in developing countries have the odds stacked against them from the beginning. They are born into poverty, education is not readily accessible, and hunger is on their minds from the moment they wake up until they cry themselves to sleep. Sadly, this is the cycle that is repeated for generations in countries like Honduras, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
St. David’s Episcopal Church in Ashburn will be hosting an evening with El Hogar, an organization working to end the cycle of poverty by working with the children of Honduras.
This informative event will be held at St. David’s (43600 Russell Branch Parkway, Ashburn, VA) on Sunday, November 8, at 7 p.m. The featured speaker will be Liz Kinchen, El Hogar’s North American Executive Director. She will be sharing stories about the lives that have been transformed by the initiatives that have been undertaken by El Hogar in Honduras. Members of past service teams from St. David’s will also share about their life-changing experiences volunteering at El Hogar and attendees will be given the chance to become a part of El Hogar’s work.

“Our connections with local individuals, churches, and other organizations throughout North America are what make our work possible,” said Liz Kinchen, El Hogar’s North American Executive Director. “Many people may not know very much about Honduras, but the plight of the country’s children and the rampant poverty there continue to be issues that require action. Our joy comes in seeing the difference that El Hogar’s programs make in the children we work with and their communities.”
El Hogar takes a multidirectional approach to combatting poverty throughout Honduras by providing their students (abandoned, orphaned, and from impoverished backgrounds) with a safe home, food, education, and vocational skills that can be taken into the workplace. These all combine to break the cycle of poverty and to give students a chance at a better future than they could have imagined. Since beginning in 1979, El Hogar has expanded its work to help 250 children each year at its four centers – an elementary school, a technical institute, a farm school, and a home for high school girls.
