Team Ashburn Skaters Debut New Synchro Programs Sunday

More than 120 local skaters prepare for competitive season

More than 120 local synchronized ice skaters will perform their new routines this Sunday as part of the 8th Annual Capitol Critique, at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Maryland. Ranging in age from 6 to 18, the boys and girls have been training all summer on their programs which feature theatrical aspects, speed, intricate formations and challenging step sequences. Themes for the eight different levels of skating lines are highly creative and include Pirates, Spiderman and the Race. Team Ashburn is also fielding a novice level team for the first time this year who is performing to Rio. Team Ashburn has developed one of the most comprehensive synchronized skating programs on the East Coast and works with world level coaches and choreographers, as well as sports psychologists and off ice strength trainers.

“The Capitol Critique is a great event”, said Team Ashburn Skating Director Jenny Cherry. “It allows us to get expert feedback from judges as well as see excellent synchro teams from all around the mid-Atlantic. It’s going to be a great kick off to an exciting season.”

Synchronized skating is a popular discipline both within the U.S. and around the world. It is a team sport in which 8-20 skaters perform a program together and uses the same judging system as singles, pairs and dance. It is currently being considered for inclusion in the 2018 Olympics. The Capitol Critique will be held at the Gardens Ice House located at 13800 Old Gunpowder Road in Laurel, MD on November 9, starting at 10:30am.
