Victim Dies After Ashburn Assault, Suspect Charged With Murder: Police

ASHBURN, VA — An Ashburn man who was previously charged in an assault now faces a murder charge after the victim died on Sunday, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Police identified the victim as Pedro Casalez Cala, a 38-year-old man from Ashburn. He was receiving treatment at Reston Hospital before his death.

Ever Cruz, 24, from Ashburn, was arrested last week in Maryland. He is charged with second-degree murder. If convicted, Cruz could face up to 40 years in prison.

Around 3 a.m. on Aug. 14, deputies learned about an injured person in the 45100 block of Waterpointe Terrace. When deputies arrived in the area, they found the victim had been assaulted and had life-threatening injuries, according to the police report.

On Aug. 15, authorities found Cruz in Frederick, Maryland. and took him into custody.

"The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office for their efforts in apprehending Ever Cruz and for assisting with the subsequent search warrant,” Sheriff Mike Chapman said in a news release.
